I am a typical adult amateur rider trying to not mess up my horse. I decided to write this journal to see just how typical I am. I have absolutely no talent for riding, but I do have a lot of desire and a good support team in my trainer, my friends, and family. This book chronicles one year in my dressage journey. It includes exercises from my lessons that have helped me, insights I picked up from big name trainers and judges, and how I dealt with the trials and tribulations of training a horse. My hope is that you learn something from my mistakes and my successes; that you find it entertaining, and most of all, realize that you are not alone in your riding struggles.

A Year in the Life with My Horse An Amateur Dressage Rider Journey Meredith Rogers

Without giving the end away, this diary style book chronicles the ups and downs of learning the fundamentals of training a less than perfect horse and adult amateur rider in the dressage basics. It is a worthwhile read for the ever expanding adult amateur dressage rider population, that decide to embark on the journey of learning dressage and potentially training the average horse up through the higher dressage levels.
The highs and lows of this type of riding pair is very well described in casual conversational detail that simply flows from start to end. It would have been helpful to also include periodic photos chronicling the horse's muscular structure changing with its progression up the dressage training pyramid to help understand visually what the different schooling exercises help to develop in the horse, as a rider often is too subjective to these subtle changes and can't really appreciate the true progress they have made without a visual reminder. It is a good read, short and sweet and to the point. The writing is witty and dry at times, to the blatant point at others, but I felt is written from the heart. I truly I recognized myself many times over in her daily entries and even found myself routing for her in her "ah, huh" moments in the saddle and even felt the heaviness of their troubled moments. I would really like to read a follow up book from the author and her continued journey in dressage.

A Year in the Life with My Horse An Amateur Dressage Rider Journey Meredith Rogers Reviews

This is a most enjoyable book, especially for those of us trying, like the author, to improve our riding, whether on unwilling, unruly or cooperative horses. Whether your riding problems are those of the author or different ones, you will empathise with her on her journey.

What I do want to know is what happened - I would like the journey to continue and to become part of the journey. When is the next book?
I read it because I love horses and am myself trying to juggle work marriage kids and dressage, but I could have written this book myself.
boring feel sorry for the poor horse
